Will dharna bring KCR, Kodandaram together?

In an obvious attempt for a rapprochement between Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K Chandrasekhar Rao and convener of the Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) Kodandaram, the protagonists of Telangana are making every effort.

As part of their exercise, a ‘Maha Dharna’ is being planned on Tuesday in front of the Indira Park where leaders of TRS, TJAC and the Telangana Nagara Samithi are expected to take part.

Though TRS senior leader and MLA Harish Rao said in Hyderabad on Monday that the dharna is part of their agitational programme to realize the separate state demand, it is being viewed as an another bid by the Telangana protagonists to bridge the gap between KCR and Kodandaram. Ever since the Telangana march on September 30, KCR has been demanding that Kodandaram be replaced as the convener of the JAC. Despite the mediation by some TRS seniors, KCR is keen on Kodandaram’s exit.

Initially, a protest demonstration was planned for Monday, but it was postponed due to the demise of KCR’s sister and that the TRS president is also preoccupied with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to the city to attend the ongoing CoP-11 convention in the city. Against this backdrop, Tuesday’s programme too is being viewed as yet another attempt to bring both KCR and Kodandaram together.

Harish Rao told mediapersons on Monday that leaders and activists from TRS, TJAC and the Telangana Nagara will attend the dharna on a large scale. Dubbing the agitational programme as a ‘Maha Dharna”, Rao did not mention whether KCR is taking part in it.

“If the Congress-led UPA Government is willing to form Telangana state we will be happy. Otherwise, we will grow as a strong force to reckon with and finally realize our dream by burying the Congress in the region,” he stated.

The TRS MLA felt that Chief Minister N Kirankumar Reddy is planning to move the Prime Minister by a helicopter from the international airport to the CoP-11 venue in Hitech City in order to escape the protest by the TRS. “The Congress, which included formation of Telangana state in its election manifesto failed to fulfill the promise,” he stated.
