Modi's cabinet reshuffle is on hand reinforcement of his team. On the other, it is an interim score card for his ministers.

Some ministers, though retained, have been given less important portfolios, but some managed to impress Modi with their work. Their stock has gone up.

And there are some real surprises. Some inclusions surprised everyone as are some omissions.
Here is a lowdown on whose stock has gone up and whose is down:

UPs
Arun Jaitley: Though he has been divested off the defence ministry, he has been given the additional portfolio of I and B ministry. This only shows how Modi trusts Jaitley. Jaitley is also Modi's pointsman for Jammu and Kashmir.

Manohar Parrikar: It's a huge responsibility for Parrikar. From a small state's CM, he has now become the all-important defence minister of the country. He will play a key role in the BJP government in view of the party's hawkish stand on matters of defence.

Mahesh Sharma: Mahesh Sharma, the first-time MP from Gautam Budh Nagar, got a big leg up with Modi giving him independent charge of Culture and Tourism Ministries as well as MoS for Civil Aviation.

Downs
Sadananda Gowda: It's downfall for the former Karnataka CM. His son's misdemeanors and the allegations of corruption have apparantly forced Modi's hand. He will now take care of the Law Ministry.

Prakash Javadekar: The ever-smiling Javadekar was divested of the independent charge of the I and B. He is also relieved of the junior ministership of parliamentary affairs.

Harshvardhan: Harshvardhan's removal from Health and Family Welfare is a surprise. He has now been shifted to relatively lighter portfolio of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences. Or, is it the Modi way of telling him to be prepared to take up Delhi CM's job?

Gen VK Singh: Gen VK Singh was minister for North Eastern Affairs minister. This is a key thrust area for Narendra Modi. But, Gen Singh appeared to have failed in impressing Modi. Now he is given a relatively lighter one of Statistics and Programme Implementation dept.

Narendra Singh Tomar: Narendra Singh Tomar was relieved from the Labour portfolio. The portfolio has now gone to Bandaru Dattatreya as independent charge.

Surprise
The appointment of JP Nadda as Union minister for Health and Family Welfare is undoubtedly the biggest surprise. Nadda was in the race to become party national chief.

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi: Though he has become the second Muslim minister in Modi cabinet, he is still a minister of state and not a cabinet minister.

Ommission of Varun Gandhi of UP, Anurag Thakur of Himachal and Dushyant Singh of Rajasthan - all VIP scions. They will have to wait for some more time now.
