Hyderabad: Supreme Court Judge Justice R Subhash Reddy on Sunday stressed the need to arrest delays in disposing cases and appealed to judges and advocates to improve their reading habits to ensure it.

Litigants, he said, want speedy disposal of cases and judicial officers and advocates should work together and ensure increase in disposal rate.

"Delays are occurring.... one reason for this I strongly believe, is that the reading habit of judges and advocates is not there compared to our younger days... " he said at the inauguration of the City Civil Courts Complex-Phase-II at Secunderabad.

Reddy suggested that the delays could be cut short if the case papers were gone through in advance.

He said newly appointed judicial officers were not giving due respect to senior members of the Bar from the Bench.

At the same time, he cautioned members of the bar to not cross the 'Laxman Rekha' and respect members of the judiciary.

"We have internal problems and have to solve them ourselves. The litigant public are only concerned about their cases and delay and we are responsible for speedy disposal," he said

Supreme Court Judge, Justice N V Ramana, who earlier inaugurated the City Civil Courts Complex-Phase-II, emphasised the need for judges and lawyers to perform their roles in providing access to justice.

"The biggest problem for the Indian judiciary is pending cases...It is the responsibility of the members of Bar and no doubt Judges also", the judge said.

Stating that lawyers are the guardians of the system, he said it was their duty to explain to their clients why cases were being delayed

Supreme Court Judge Justice L Nageswara Rao said the independence of the judiciary was non-negotiable and providing basic facilities for courts was an obligation of the state.

He said after the infrastructure has been provided, judges and lawyers should rededicate themselves to the cause of justice.

Judicial officers, don't stop learning...be courteous and modest and you will definitely do your job well.

Lawyers play an important role in administration of justice. Without lawyers courts cannot function. All of you should remind yourselves that we exist for the service of the society through administration of justice," Rao added.

Telangana High Court Chief Justice Raghvendra S Chauhan expressed hope that the infrastructure at courts would be strengthened and new faclities added to existing courts in the state.PTI
