Hyderabad: With the TDP and BJP announcing their candidates for the bypoll to Huzurnagar Assembly constituency in Telangana, this could turn out be a multi-cornered fight with the TRS and Congress also in the fray. The By election is scheduled to be held on October 21.

TDP's Telangana unit president L Ramana announced Chava Kiranmai ( State Organising Secretary) as the party candidate for the poll, while the BJP's Central Election Committee announced Kota Rama Rao as its candidate.

The state Congress president N Uttam Kumar Reddy's wife and former MLA N Padmavati is the Congress candidate. She had lost the Assembly election from Kodad constituency in the same district. While the TRS has fielded S Saidi Reddy as its candidate. Saidi Reddy lost to Uttam Kumar Reddy in December 2018.

The bypoll in Huzurnagar was necessitated by the resignation of sitting Congress MLA Uttam Kumar Reddy after he won the Lok Sabha Elections from Nalgonda constituency.

Hoping to revive the TDP's fortunes in Telangana, party President N Chandrababu Naidu decided to field its party candidate in the by-election, which has come as a surprise after the TDP faced a humiliating defeat in the December 2018 elections after it won only two seats.

In March this year, the TDP MLA from Sattupally Assembly Constituency Sandra Venkata Veeraiah subsequently defected to the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).

It is reported that Chandrababu Naidu in a bid to revive its fortunes in Telangana decided to field its party candidate for the Huzurnagar by-election after consulting local TDP leaders from Nalgonda district. Political analysts feel that this was an attempt by the party to give an impression that the party still exists at the grass-root level in Telangana. A senior TDP leader R Chandrashekhar Reddy expressed confidence that the TDP's revival would start from Huzurnagar.

It may be recollected that the TDP had left Huzurnagar seat to Congress as part of the alliance pact in 2018.

Political analysts say that by winning the Huzurnagar by poll, the Congress would also have a score to settle and prove the TRS as unethical after 12 of its MLAs had merged with the ruling party.

The TRS, which won 88 seats, increased its tally to over 100 by luring 15 MLAs, including 12 of the Congress, to join them.

The Huzurnagar bypoll has now become a battle of prestige as Congress leader Uttam Kumar Reddy was elected from here three consecutive times. (With inputs From PTI )
