Guntur: Vigilance and enforcement department of the Andhra Pradesh government seized 1871 quintals of onions worth over Rs 61.95 lakh in Guntur district. Five cases have been booked under Section 17 (c) of AP agricultural produce and livestock market act, 1966 in the district for illegal hoading of onions without proper license.

Of the number, marketing officials filed cases against 28 traders under relevant sections.

Illegal hoarding of onions cause a hike in price and creates a situation of artificial scarcity in the markets. A total of 3,398.02 quintals of onions were seized in the state to the tune of Rs 1.65 crore.

In Nellore district, eight cases were booked and 112 quintals of onions were seized worth Rs 48.49 lakh.
