Tandur, A Fight Of Arch-Rivals, Vikarabad May Go Congress Way

The Vikarabad assembly constituency (SC) in the undivided Ranga Reddy district was represented in the recently dissolved House by B Sanjeeva Rao of the TRS. With just over 2 lakh voters, the constituency was represented by the Congress candidates in eight terms while the TDP candidates were victorious on four occasions. In the 2014 assembly elections, Sanjeeva Rao created a sensation of sorts by defeating former minister Gaddam Prasad Kumar of the Congress by a margin of over 10,000 votes. The TRS leadership roped in Dr. Methuku Anand for contesting from Vikarabad following Sanjeeva Rao's recent resignation from the party.

With this, Gaddam Prasad Kumar, with the support of the Congress-led people's front, has a target to outvote the TRS's new contestant and BJP's Rayapalli Sai Krishna in the December 7 polls. It appears that the Congress will emerge victorious in the constituency this time around. Recently, TRS MP Konda Vishweshwar Reddy resigned from the party over disappointment over the TRS government's failure in delivering on its promises made in the region, especially in the Tandur and Vikarabad constituencies. His dissent could have a bearing in the assembly polls, some analysts say, while others maintain that he was aloof and elitist himself.

The Tandur assembly constituency in the undivided Ranga Reddy district, once represented by former Chief Minister Marri Chenna Reddy, was represented in the recently dissolved House by four-time MLA Patnam Mahender Reddy. Prior to his win in 2014, the caretaker minister was elected from the constituency as a TDP candidate on three occasions--1994, 1999 and 2009.

With Chevella MP Vishweshwar Reddy's open criticsm of the TRS minister's irregularities and corruption, the Tandur assembly seat turned out to be a matter of pride for the Congress, which fielded Pilot Rohit Reddy, who was TRS ticket hopeful in 2014 before Mahender Reddy allegedly snatched it away from him. Also, Patel Ravi Shankar of the BJP is also in the contest.
