Hyderabad: In a sensational ruling, the Hyderabad High Court today ordered the reinstatement of Dharna Chowk in the city, which was closed for protests by the State government.

The Court order came in response to senior Congress leader V Hanumanth Rao's plea over the closure of the popular dharna spot. Allowing for usage of Dharna Chowk for protests in its earlier state, the Court issued orders to the government.

Back in 2017, the Telangana government issued orders for closure of the famous Dharna Chowk, which was a go-to destination for protesters during the Telangana agitation. It was claimed that due to frequent protests, it was causing traffic jams and inconvenience to the public in the region.

Criticism followed the government action saying that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi's (TRS) attitude was undemocratic in crippling the Opposition parties and civil society organizations in their attempts to expose and condemn the ruling party's irregularities. Closure of Dharna Chowk, located adjacent to the road opposite Indira Park at Lower Tank Bund area, led to the Opposition parties left with no place in the city to voice their opinions.
