Telangana, AP Projects to Get Heavy Inflows After Record Rainfall in Maharashtra

Hyderabad: The farmers in Telagana and AP have a reason to cheer as major irrigation projects in the Krishna and Godavari basins are poised to receive huge inflows, according to the Central Water Commission’s (CWC) latest forecast of flood in the two river basins. With Maharashtra receiving a three-digit rainfall during the past few days, the reservoirs in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh (AP) are poised to get heavy inflows.

According to the CWC forecast on flood in the two river basins, projects in both the Telugu states are expected to receive huge inflows in next two to four days. In Telangana, most of the major projects were getting good inflows in the two basins with good rainfall over the past few days in the local catchment areas.

Since all the upstream reservoirs in Maharashtra and Karnataka are full, water levels in Sriramsagar, Yellampally, Kaddam, Jurala, Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar are likely to get huge inflows in the days to come.

As per the forecast of CWC, Srisailam project will receive good flows in the next four to seven days. Srisailam has already been receiving some inflows with Telangana releasing water from Jurala over the past few days. Against the water level of 805 feet as on Tuesday, the level at Srisailam stood at 824 feet against the full reservoir level of 885 feet.

Maharashtra during the past two days recorded some vigorous Monsoon conditions that pounded extremely heavy three-digit rainfall over most parts of the region.

With 389 mm of rain, Mahabaleswar was the rainiest city of not only the region but of the entire country on Monday. This was also the highest rainfall recorded in 24 hours during the last 10 years. This was followed by Harnai at 212 mm of rain, which also recorded highest rainfall in 24 hours in last eight years.

The CWC officials said in the advisory that heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall had been forecast for the next two days in the catchment areas of river Godavari and Krishna in Maharashtra. Water levels in Godavari and Krishna and their tributaries were rising rapidly in Nasi, Ahmednagar, Pune, Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur districts of Maharashtra.
