Chennai: Opposition parties including DMK and CPI(M) staged a walkout from the Tamil Nadu Assembly for the second day on Wednesday over issues including Mekedatu dam, stir by Neyveli Lignite Corporation employees and the recent violence in Seshasamudram village in Villupuram district.

Soon after Chief Minister Jayalalithaa completed her suo motu statement on memorail to late actor Sivaji Ganesan, DMK floor leader Stalin said his party had given 22 adjournment motions on various issues.

He was supported by other members of his party who were on their feet seeking permission.

Just before Jayalalithaa began her speech, J Anbazhagan (DMK) said he wanted to raise the drinking water issue in Chennai and had submitted a calling attention motion and wanted to know as to when it would be taken up.

Speaker P Dhanapal said the adjournment motions given by the DMK were under his consideration. I have sent the papers to the respective departments for response.

They are under scrutiny; you cannot insist that it should be taken up immediately. It will be taken up one by one; Dhanapal said and asked them to resume their seats.

The DMK members, however, did not pay heed and staged a walkout.

Later, Stalin told reporters outside the House that they could not raise issues including the Mekedatu dam in the Assembly and hence they walked out.

Members of Left parties, including CPI(M)'s A Soundararajan, K Balabharathi and CPI's M Arumugam sought permission to deliberate upon the recent 'violent' incidents in Seshasamudram village in Villupuram district and the stir by employees of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation.

Similarly, Congress member Vijayadharani, Puthiya Tamilagam member K Krishnaswamy, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi members Jawahirrullah and Aslam Basha walked out over issues including Seshasamudram violence.
