Supreme Court Nod To In-Person CA Exams in India

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI)  exams to be held in-person from July 5th. The top court was hearing a batch of pleas seeking different reliefs including an opt-out option for the candidates, postponement of the exam, and an increase in the number of centres this year. The Supreme Court said that the regulatory body has also been told that students, who have been affected by Covid, should get an "opt-out" option.

The top court told the regulatory body to "nominate the medical authority" that can certify candidates - who've been impacted by coronavirus - to make it easier for them to drop out.

The top court was hearing petitions to increase the examination centres and extra attempts for students appearing in intermediate and final exams on Monday. ICAI told the Supreme Court that the time was conducive to conduct the CA exams as the COVID-19 spread is now at a substantially low level.

The CA examinations were supposed to be held in May but were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and are now scheduled to be held from July 5-20.

A bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar, Dinesh Maheshwari, and Aniruddha Bose said that since it has not received the ICAI note, it will hear the matter on Tuesday and after hearing the matter allowed for the exams to be conducted as per the revised dates from July.
