Kurnool: As a result of complete disregard towards maternity, a three-month-old pregnant school teacher in Kurnool bled to death after she was forced to attend a workshop despite her ill-health.

The teacher, 32-year-old Sudharani, who hails from Anantapur, taught Hindi at the Anantapur branch of the Sri Chaitanya School.

According to reports in a leading web portal, she had applied for leave and sought exemption from attending the workshop as she was not feeling well.

However, she was allegedly denied leave and was asked to be present for the special workshop in the school’s Kurnool branch at the Kattamanchi residential campus.

It is to be noted that while women continue to work during their pregnancy, chances of miscarriage are very high during the first 12 weeks.

The workshop began on May 6. On the third day of the session which was on Wednesday evening, she fell unconscious and started bleeding. School management rushed her to the hospital but she died on Thursday morning as she had already lost a lot of blood because of the miscarriage.

She was the sole earner in the family and is survived by her husband and son, reports say.

Her death has sparked outrage among the villagers and her colleagues. The Private Teachers and Lecturers Union (PTLU) staged protests against the school and demanded justice for Sudharani.

Chand Basha, the state convenor of PTLU, said that the matter was tried to put under the cover by the school's management. He said that she was compelled to attend the workshop despite her ill-health and questioned the organisation of the workshop during the summer holidays and claimed that rules were flouted indiscriminately to hold the ‘unauthorised’ workshop.

Meanwhile, the district collector has been informed about the incident after which he ordered the District Education Officer (DEO) to initiate a probe into the issue.

The association has said that it will now file a police complaint against the management of the school.
