MUMBAI: Three days after he was sworn in, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday announced his resignation, saying the BJP no longer has majority after his deputy, NCP's Ajit Pawar, quit citing "personal reasons".

With the stint of three days, Fadnavis became the first CM of the state to remain as the CM for the shortest time beating PK Sawant, who was the CM for nine days in 1963.

The political developments in Maharashtra came with twists and turns and draw immense resemblance with that of what happened in Karnataka during government formation last year.

In May 2018, BJP after emerging as the single largest party in the state polls, BS Yediyurappa took oath as the CM for his fourth stint. However, the party failed to garner support from other parties and Yeddiyurappa resigned before voting on confidence motion.

He was the CM for only three days.

This followed that the Janata Dal (Secular) allied the Congress and formed the government in the state with HD Kumaraswamy as the CM of the state.

But after huge defection political drama, where the JD-S and the Congress both blamed the Ysddyurappa, 18 MLAs, which included two Independents withdrew support.

After a three-week-long intense power struggle, the 14-month-old Congress-JDS coalition government headed by Kumaraswamy collapsed after losing the vote of confidence in the Assembly.

BS Yediyurappa took oath for the second time with a spelling change of his name - from BS Yeddyurappa to BS Yediyurappa.
