Timeline Of How Maharashtra Political Drama Unfolded

MUMBAI: Three days after he was sworn in, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday announced his resignation, saying the BJP no longer has a majority after his deputy, NCP's Ajit Pawar, quit citing "personal reasons".

Here is a timeline of the political developments in Maharashtra:

October 21, 2019: Elections held for Maharastra Assembly for 288 seats

October 24: Results declared, BJP gets 105, Shivsena 56 seats, NCP 54 seats and Congress secured 44 seats. The majority mark is 145 in the 288-Assembly house. The pact was sealed as BJP would form a government with its ally Shiv Sena in which the numbers came to 161 seats.

October 25: Governor invites BJP to indicate a willingness to form a government and they had given 48 hours to prove their majority

October 25-November 9: BJP and its ally Shiv Sena developed differences among them over the Chief Ministerial post. The Shiv Sena demanded that they are given the CM's post for 2.5 years. But the BJP didn't give in to the demand and split from the pre-poll alliance.

November 10: BJP expresses its inability to form government in Maharashtra as they were just 105 in number.

November 10: Since Shiv Sena was the second-largest party with 56 seats, the governor asked the party to form a government by granting it 24 hours to prove majority.

November 11: Shiv Sena stakes claim to form a government while submitting that they had the support and requested three days to submit the letters of support to the governor.

November 11: The governor declined the Shiv Sena’s request accommodating three days to prove their majority and also rejected the claim of Shiv Sena to form a government. The Governor invited third-largest party NCP to indicate its willingness to form a government.

November 12: With no party coming forward to form the government, President's rule was imposed in Maharashtra. Shiv Sena challenged the rejection by the governor in the Supreme Court.

November 22: Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress came together, agrees to name Udhav Thackeray as the Chief Minister of Maharastra unanimously.

November 23:President’s rule revoked in Maharastra at 5:47 AM and Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar as Deputy Chief Minister.

November 23: Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress combine moved Supreme Court over the governor’s decision and the Supreme Court registry postponed matter form hearing on Sunday, November 24.

November 24: Supreme Court asked the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to place letters of the governor recommending the revocation of President’s Rule and issued notices to the Centre.

November 25:Supreme Court reserved the judgement to November 26 at 10:30 AM

November 26:The Supreme court directed Maharastra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to ensure all elected MLAs of the house are sworn in on Wednesday itself.

November 26: Ajit Pawar resigned as Deputy Chief Minister and Devendra Fadnavis resigned as Chief Minister as he failed to muster number.

November 26: Resolution proposing Uddhav Thackeray's name as the Chief Minister candidate and leader of 'Maha Vikas Aghadi' passed unanimously by all MLAs.
