MIM supporters held for setting APSRTC bus on fire

Polices arrested eight people including an imam who allegedly tried to set ablaze an Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bus on the night of January 21, reportedly angered over the remand of MIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi.

Prime accused Syed Dastagiri, an imam, along with other accused, mostly youngsters in the age-group of 19 to 25 years, an APSRTC bus bound to Yemmiganur from Hyderabad with 35 passengers, by blocking the road with two-wheelers and started pelting stones, the police said.

One of the accused poured petrol in the bus driver's cabin and lit a fire, due to which the driver's seat and steering were burnt partially and driver M Krishnaiah received burn injuries on his hands, chest and face, the police said.

The police apprehended Syed Dastagiri from his house in Jiyaguda this afternoon and based on his interrogation, apprehended seven other accused, who confessed to have committed the offence, the police said.

Asaduddin was sent to judicial remand by a Sangareddy court on January 21 in connection with a case against him for allegedly obstructing Medak District Collector A K Singhal and other officials from carrying out their duties in 2005.
