This year the theme for the World AIDS Day 2019 is “Ending the HIV/AIDS Epidemic: Community by Community”

Every year December 1 is celebrated as the World AIDS Day across the globe. Spreading awareness of the causes and prevention of AIDS is the main motto behind celebrating this day. It is an opportunity for people across the globe to unite and in the fight against HIV and also providing support to the people living with HIV. People who are in the battle of HIV needs to be motivated to fight against this fatal disease.

HISTORY

World AIDS Day was first observed in 1988. Since then every year, different organisation across the world celebrate this day to bring attention to the HIV disease and the knowledge about the same to spread awareness. World AIDS Day is the first-ever global health day.  This day is also celebrated to commemorate those who have died from AIDS-related illness.

This day is a reminder to the people that HIV still exists and we need to fight together to end the disease.

What is AIDS?

Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome, is a pandemic disease caused due to the infection of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which causes damage to the immune system.

According to World Health Organisation (WHO), "Around 37.9 million people living with HIV at the end of 2018, 79 per cent received testing, 62 per cent received treatment, and 53 per cent had achieved suppression of the HIV virus with reduced risk of infecting others."

Today the scientific advances are researching and finding treatments for HIV. Various formulas and methods have been also taken to fight against discrimination and to safeguard HIV patients with proper treatments.

Former Miss World Manushi Chillar after winning the title in 2017, founded a non-profit organisation, Project Shakti, aimed at improving the menstrual hygiene of women in India. Manushi constantly works with women in over 20 villages of India to spread the message of sanitation. Manushi is expanding her duties of spreading awareness through the drive Project Shakti by starting AIDS awareness programme among rural women across these 20 villages in India.
