Eluru (West Godavari): In a tragic road accident, a child and five women were killed when the car they were travelling in plunged into a canal, on Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred near Kovvali village of Denduluru mandal in West Godavari district. Two women and the driver escaped with minor injuries. It is learnt that the driver was drunk at the time of the accident. A group of seven women and a child, all residents of Chellapally in Vijayawada, were returning from a function at Kovvali.

As soon as the Scorpio (AP07 AR 2415) plunged into the canal, villagers rushed to the spot and attempted to save the victims. However, the victims got trapped in the vehicle as the doors were locked. The driver and two women managed to escape. Noticing that the driver was in an inebriated condition, the villagers thrashed him before handing him over to the police.

YS Jagan Condoles Kovvali Accident Victims' Death

YSR Congress Party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Thursday expressed grief over the tragic mishap at Kovvali village of Denduluru mandal that claimed six lives.

The YSRCP chief extended his heartfelt condolences to the grief-stricken families of the accident victims. Six persons were killed in the road accident when the driver of a Scorpio car lost control and it fell into a canal. All the deceased belonged to the same family.
