GHMC To Install Air Purifier Units In Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderbad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is all set to install 100 outdoor air pollution purifiers as an initiative to clean up Hyderabad air. As a pilot initiative, their plan is to first install 100 units which can go up to 500 units too.

According to reports, these purifiers will filter toxic substances which can cause difficulties in breathing. The purifiers are already in use in Maharashtra and Delhi and the same units will be installed in Hyderabad.

According to reports, the purifiers will be first installed at high pollution zones like traffic signals. Once succesful, the purifiers will be placed at other key locations as metro stations, toll booths, railway stations, fuel stations and airports.

"An agreement for purifiers will be signed this week," a GHMC official said to a daily.

“A 100 locations have been identified for the purifiers. We are waiting for approval at the standing committee meeting to take place tomorrow," GHMC Zonal Commissioner, Hari Chandana said to the daily.

What are Outdoor Pollution Controller units?

The purifiers which can filter the toxic substances from the air, harmful to human beings are known as  Outdoor Pollution Controller units. They can filter the pollutants like carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hydrocarbons which are emitted in the atmosphere from vehicles and factories. Each unit will improve the air quality within the radius of 60 feet. It will have the capacity of 2,000 cubic feet air per minute.

"We have a device which pulls in polluted air and locally purifies it. Each of the unit costs around Rs 75,000 to manufacture. But they will be installed at public places for free. Our revenue model ensures sustainabilty of the project as well as unit maintenance. The maintainence cost for the public installation will be covered through sponser displays that will act like advertisement boards and will generate revenue to care of the units," Sanjay Bahuguna, founder of Bahuguna Techmotives Private Limited said to the daily, speaking about the device.

After the succesful installation of the purifiers regular monitoring of the devices will be done and the pollutants and toxic substances will be analysed.
