School Expels Teacher For Giving Birth 4 Months After Marriage

Malappuram: A teacher of a pre-primary school in Kerala's Kottakal has alleged that school authorities and the parent-teacher association of the school is not allowing her to rejoin duty as she gave birth to a child four months to her marriage. She further alleged that the parents and teachers have been verbally abusive to her at a PTA meeting.

According to her complaint, she was working in the school in the last five years. She was divorced from her first marriage and was preparing for her second marriage.

Due to delay in divorce procedure, she started live-in with her partner. They got legally married in June 2018 and she applied for maternity leave four months after the marriage. She had delivered the baby on the second day after she applied leave.

However, when she rejoined school in January 2019, she alleged that she was not allowed to rejoin and the school authorities cited that she had delivered the baby four moths to her marriage.

Humiliated, she wen to child rights commission and filed a case against school authorities who ordered ab inquiry and sought a clarification from deputy director of education (DDE). After the inquiry was completed, the DDE asked the school authorities to allow her to rejoin duty.

Going against the order, the headmaster and PTA office-bearers did not follow the orders.

The teacher said that she has filed a police complaint on June 14.

Investigation has begun and case would be registered after her statement, sub-inspector of Kottakkal police station Sandhya Devi told a leading daily.
