CBIT students stage protest against hiked fee on the campus on Thursday.

Hyderabad: Students of city's premier engineering college Chaitanya Bharati Institute of Technology (CBIT) staged an agitation in protest against the exorbitant fee hike by the management on Thursday.

As the trouble snowballed into a major agitation on the campus, the college management declared holidays on Friday and Saturday. The management said the students' opposition to the fee hike will be discussed in the board and a decision will be announced after the college reopens on Monday.

The students boycotted the exams and took out a rally on the campus demanding immediate rollback of the hiked fee structure. The annual fee of BTech students has been hiked from Rs1.30 lakh to nearly Rs2.00 lakh with a retrospective effect. The 2/2 semester students were also asked to pay the differential amount of around Rs70,000 for their previous year's study which has sparked a widespread protest among the students and parents.

The management justified the hike saying the amount would be spent on the salaries of the teachers and facilities on the campus. However, students alleged that the management is only squeezing them by imposing additional fee in the middle of the course. "How can they hike the fee to such an extent and ask us pay for our previous year's study?" students said. The affidavits agreeing to pay hiked fees were collected from the students by force, students claim.
