Polavaram rural: Tension prevailed at Ramaiahpeta village in West Godavari district after cracks developed on the road at a construction site of the state government’s Polavaram project. The workers at the site were in panic when the cracks appeared at the mechanical shed of a sub-contracting agency, Triveni Constructions on Saturday.

Following this, the heavy machinery, vehicles and equipment were shifted to a safe place. According to the reports, the excavation works are in progress for a spill channel below the hill and the cracks developed due to a heap of stones. However, the authorities at the site assured that there is no concerning factor and the project will be completed smoothly.

This is the third such incident to take place in the state in the period of six months. In November last year, cracks appeared on the road that led to a Polavaram project site. With this, the road to the village was closed and the project works were interrupted. This year, in February, cracks once again developed off the road leading to the project area opposite the Spillway restaurant. Cement structures around the restaurant crashed. The project authorities then acted immediately and corrected the road. The same repeated in the 902 Hill View area on Saturday.

A major multi-purpose irrigation project being constructed on the Godavari River, the Polavaram project is spread across three states – Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh. As of now, a dam is under construction in West Godavari and East Godavari districts.
