Kakinada: The East Godavari district lies in the coastal Andhra region in India. Its district headquarters is at Kakinada. The 2011 census records it as the most populous district of the state with a population of 5,151,549.
The district is bounded by Vishakhapatnam on the north, on the west by West Godavari district, on the east and south by the Bay of Bengal. It has a coastline of 144 km.
East Godavari, the district with the maximum number of assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh, is the bellwether district in the state. The party which gets the most number of seats in East Godavari goes to form the government in the state.
The district has three Lok Sabha constituencies - Rajahmundry, Kakinada, Amalapuram - and 19 Assembly seats. In 2014, the TDP-BJP alliance won 13 seats in the state and the YSRCP to 5.
Kakinada Lok Sabha Seat:
A general constituency, the key contest in Kakinada will be between the TDP’s Chalamalasetti Sunil, YSR Congress Party's Vanga Geetha, BJP’s Yalla Venkata Ramamohana Rao (Dorababu), and Congress’ MM Pallam Raju.
In 2014, Thota Narasimham of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) recorded a narrow victory over Sunil Chalamalasetty of the YSR Congress.
Narasimham has since joined the YSRC while Chalamalasetty shifted to the TDP.
Once a Congress stronghold, the party had won the seat between 1957 and 1980.
Its winning streak was broken by the TDP which won it in 1984, the year when it contested for the first time. However, in 2014, Narasimham’s victory was one of the narrowest with a margin of 3,431 votes.
The BJP has a weak presence and the battle is mainly between the TDP and the YSRCP.
Rajahmundry Lok Sabha Seat:
Spread across East Godavari and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh, Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency, once a Congress stronghold has been the TDP bastion since 1984. The constituency is vital for the presence of industries and agriculture and aquaculture.
In 2014 elections, TDP’s Murali Mohan defeated Boddu Venkataramana Chowdary of the YSRCP while Durgesh Kandula of the Congress finished a distant third.
The constituency will see a fight between the TDP MP Murali Mohan's daughter-in-law Maganti Roopa and the YSRCP's Margani Bharat. The Jana Sena has fielded Akula Satyanarayana, who defected from the BJP.
Amalapuram Lok Sabha Seat:
The assembly seat is reserved for the SCs.

Chinta Anuradha, riding on a popular wave favouring the YSRCP is set to win this seat. She is also a popular social worker in her own right and enjoys goodwill on account of the reputation of her father, Krishnamurthy, as a great son of the soil here.

The Election Commission of India had announced that Andhra Pradesh will go to polls in a single phase on April 11. Both the Lok Sabha and legislative assembly polls will be held in the state simultaneously.
The state assembly has 175 seats while Parliamentary elections will be held across 25 seats. Notably, this would be the first assembly elections in the region post-bifurcation.
