Kakinada: The East Godavari district lies in the coastal Andhra region in India. Its district headquarters is at Kakinada. The 2011 census records it as the most populous district of the state with a population of 5,151,549.

The district is bounded by Vishakhapatnam on the north, on the west by West Godavari district, on the east and south by the Bay of Bengal. It has a coastline of 144 km.

East Godavari, the district with the maximum number of assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh, is the bellwether district in the state. The party which gets the most number of seats in East Godavari goes to form the government in the state.

The district has three Lok Sabha constituencies - Rajahmundry, Kakinada, Amalapuram - and 19 Assembly seats. In 2014, the TDP-BJP alliance won 13 seats in the state and the YSRCP to 5.

Once a Congress stronghold, the party had won the seat between 1957 and 1980.

Its winning streak was broken by the TDP which won it in 1984, the year when it contested for the first time. However, in 2014, Narasimham’s victory was one of the narrowest with a margin of 3,431 votes.

The BJP has a weak presence and the battle is mainly between the TDP and the YSRCP.

The constituency will see a fight between the TDP MP Murali Mohan's daughter-in-law Maganti Roopa and the YSRCP's Margani Bharat. The Jana Sena has fielded Akula Satyanarayana, who defected from the BJP.
