663 Drunken drivers sent to jail

Hyderabad: Taking a stringent action against the drunken drivers and following the outcry in a fatal accident that occurred on July 1 at the Nagarjuna circle, nearly 663 have been sent to jail by the city courts from July 1 to 25. The imprisonment was awarded by the III and the IV metropolitan magistrate courts of Errum Manzil.

The city police have booked 2,218 offenders in drunken driving menace, out of which, 663 were sentenced to jail. 379 were also sentenced to jail till the rising of the court the following day, while 106 persons were given imprisonment for two days.

22 offenders were sent to jail for 10 days while some were even imposed a fine over a lakh depending on the severity of the cases.

Under this system, those attending night out parties or going to bars and pubs will have to designate a person among themselves who will abstain from drinking so that he can safely drop them back.
