New Delhi: A 30-year man's stomach was removed by doctors after he consumed a cocktail drink. The victim, a businessman from Delhi, walked into a pub and ordered a cocktail drink laced with liquid nitrogen. He consumed the drink even before the smoke vanished. Within a few minutes, he felt severe discomfort and was rushed to Columbia Asia Hospital in Gurgaon for treatment.
The doctors, who operated upon him, were perplexed upon seeing a hole in his stomach and described the condition as — "open like a book". A portion of his stomach was removed surgically.
“Consuming liquid nitrogen can cause havoc in a person’s system. By nature, liquid nitrogen expands manifolds and evaporates when left at room temperature. The gas did not have an escape route after the person consumed it and the sphincter was closed. This had led to a perforation (a hole) in his stomach,” said Dr Amit Deepta Goswami, who performed a surgery.
The incident happened two months ago but it's impact was long on the person. The victim is recuperating from the surgery.
Recalling the incident, the man says, "When I gulped down the drink, I started feeling very uncomfortable, like how you feel when there is an acid reflux. The bartender passed me another drink and I had it, not thinking too much about the discomfort. However, within seconds, my stomach started swelling and I was in unbearable pain. Breathing was also difficult." Leave alone cocktails, the 30-year-old has given up drinking.
