Hyderabad: The YSR Congress Party has demanded the Central Government to institute a CBI probe into the irregularities and delay in Polavaram multi-purpose project. It also wanted the Centre to look into the cost escalation and irregularities in the ongoing works of various irrigation projects in the state.

Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, party senior leader Botsa Satyanarayana said, " the state has revised the estimates of Polavaram project solely to benefit the contractors in lieu of kickbacks. But, now the same TDP government is blaming the contractors for the delay, which is ridiculous. The company which was given the contract has a shady background. It was given only because the owner of the company happens to be the Party MP," he said. Botsa pointed out that though the escalation of cost was highlighted by the YSRCP many a time, the ruling TDP chose to ignore it.

"With the deadline fast approaching, the State Government is trying to cover up its inefficiency by shifting the blame on the contractors. The Polavaram multi-purpose project is entirely a Central scheme as per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. But, it was taken over by the State Government after Chandrababu Naidu had pitched in and gave the contract to his coterie for kickbacks.

"We demand that the Centre order a comprehensive inquiry by CBI on the funding, spending and the progress of work on Polavaram project. The Centre has assured to pay the rates of the previous date while the cost escalation has been manifold," Botsa said.
