World’s Largest Capstone Unearthed In Siddipet

The stone weighs around 40 tons and is 6.70 mtr in length

Hyderabad: The largest capstone in the world has been discovered by Telangana archaeology department at Narmeta village of Nangunuru mandal in Siddipet district on Tuesday.

The Archaeology officials found the stone during their excavation at the site. The stone weighs around 40 tons and is 6.70 mtr in length. There are around 50 Megalith burial sites in the area, which consists of menhirs, Dolmens and cairns. A megalith is a large stone that has been used to construct a structure or monument.

"It is an ancient human burial site.It is a stunning discovery. The capstone is the largest in the world," said D. Ramulu Naik, assistant director, archaeology department.


A large crane lifted the huge capstone and is sent to DNA test, to identify the food habits, lifestyle of the pre-historic period.

The efforts to lift the massive capstone was coordinated by SS Rangacharyulu, archaeology consultant, and Dr K. Padmanabha, assistant director (museums), as the mission required great precision.
