Jamal Khashoggi Chosen For TIME Person Of The Year

Time magazine has named The Washington Post columnist ,Jamal Khashoggi and other killed and imprisoned journalists together as its “person of the year” for 2018 . Apart from Khashoggi other journalists and one news organization including Philippine journalist Maria Ressa, Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, who have been jailed in Myanmar for a year and the staff from Capital Gazette of Annapolis, Maryland , where five people were shot to death in June ,were named together as "Person of the Year 2018 ".

US - based Khashoggi was killed two months ago when he had gone to visit Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Turkey for paperwork so he could get married. He had been critical of the Saudi regime. More than two months since Khashoggi’s disappearance, Saudi Arabia is still facing international condemnation over his brutal murder by a Saudi hit team. The 61-year-old’s body has still not been found and is believed to be burnt in acid as per Turkish investigators .

This is the first time since 1927 that Time has featured a journalist , one posthumously and a news organization together as one entity for this recognition. Time said that 2018 has been marked by manipulation and abuse of information, along with efforts by governments to foment mistrust of the facts. The magazine hopes the choice reminds people outside of journalism about the importance of the work.

The journalists named are representative of many others facing serious risks to cover the stories of our time, the magazine said. Fifty-two journalists have been murdered in 2018. In choosing Khashoggi, Time for the first time in its history picked someone who is deceased as a person of the year.
