In a sudden development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for an emergency meeting with key BJP leader. Party president Amit Shah, who was to take part in the Jana Raksha Yatra in Kerala's Kannur, cancelled his outing and rushed to Delhi to attend the meet.
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who just returned from Bangladesh tour, too attended the meeting. The meeting assumes significance in view of the mounting criticism of his economic policies. Congress and the other opposition parties have been slamming Modi's demonetisation and GST moves. The elections to the all-important Gujarat assembly too reportedly figured at the meet. The meeting reportedly discussed measures needed to put back the economy on the rails.
On Wednesday, the Centre has announced reduction in fuel prices to allay the concerns of the middle class. Poll-bound Gujarat Government has announced the removal of VAT on petroleum products. In view of all these, the BJP top leadership's meeting assumes importance.
