Laugh at him or laugh with him, scoff at his snooty use of difficult and obscure words or enjoy his exquisite turn of phrase, you simply cannot ignore Shashi Tharoor and his flair for flaunting his mastery over the English language.

Whenever author-politician Shashi Tharoor tweets, at least ten people faint. A hundred others go into a swoon of unalloyed admiration. You see how he influences people even as they try to describe his writing and its impact!

I mean in this age and day, have you come across people who have the time to check dictionaries to make sense of what someone's saying? No, right? Well, but it so happens that Shashi Tharoor makes that happen. We should perhaps call him the Rajinikanth of Politics for making the impossible happen! Or if you’re someone on the other side of the fence who believes that English is a colonial hangover, which deserves to be banished to its rightful place, you could turn your nose up in ignorance or indifference.

Now, back to where we started—Shashi Tharoor is known for his impeccable English. There can be no two opinions on that. Be it in his talks, books or even tweets it's such a delight to read Tharoor's sentences. His choice of words, not always incomprehensible, but often not very reader-friendly either. Quite frequently, you need to do a double take to get what Tharoor seems to imply.

Yet, the response his tweet evokes is something unimaginable. Recently, Tharoor had reacted to a media report on Sunanda Pushkar. This is what he had to say...

“Exasperating farrago of distortions, misrepresentations & outright lies being broadcast by an unprincipled showman masquerading as a journalist." And there ended the debate! Or so one would have thought. Who would even attempt to understand such a complex statement, let alone draw all the words in their arsenal because they would find themselves scraping the bottom of their barrel in terms of their own language resources!

Perhaps to give a fitting reply to those who made fun of his language, the Congress MP’s latest assured his fellow countrymen that his tweets were not meant to suggest that he wears his language skills on his sleeve, in a Tharoorian manner of speaking. And... again, one of the words he used 'rodomontade' became the most googled word and most searched for meanings in the dictionary in no time! One thing is for sure-if you want to improve your English vocab, follow Shashi Tharoor on Twitter and you will not regret it!
