Facebook Post On Beef Eating Deleted in 2017 Sparks Controversy

Guwahati: The Assam Police filed a case against a Gauhati University research scholar in connection with a two-year-old deleted Facebook post about consumption of beef.

The post was written by Rehana Sultana. Now, Sultana's original post, written in Assamese in June 2017, read, “Today, we are also participating in Pakistan’s joy by gorging on beef! What I eat depends on my tastebuds! However, don’t make yourselves the subject of controversy simply by talking about the taboo subject of beef.”

The reference to the point of 'Pakistan's joy' was to the loss of the Indian cricket team to Pakistan in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.

The whole controversy erupted after her deleted post re-surfaced on a northeast based web portal called 'InsideNE' where the article's headline read, "Gauhati University Girl Relates Eating Beef with the ‘Joy of Pakistan'" and it claims that the post was written on Bakri Eid. The article was posted on August 14 this year.

The article goes on to question,"This post is raising several questions: Who is this girl? What is her relation with India’s arch-rival Pakistan? Why is she posting about her personal food preference in social media? When she tries to identify her with her food preference how can she warn others."

After the post went viral, police registered a suo motu case against the research scholar on Wednesday morning. Sultana has been charged under Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code (promoting enmity) and Section 67 of the IT Act (publishing a defamatory post).

Reacting to the controversy, Sultana issued a statement saying, "The post was completely sarcastic in nature to release the frustration at the loss of India to Pakistan in the Champions Trophy two years back, which was immediately deleted after protests from friends."

“But it is unfortunate that the screenshot of the same post was circulated with modified content and out of context.”

The 28-year-old young activist alleged that this was a conspiracy to demoralise her. She said that old post was dug out because she was involved in managing and helping applicants in Lower Assam who were left out in the National Register of Citizens or the NRC draft.

Meanwhile, Rehana has three first information reports lodged against her, which includes one which regards the Miyah poetry movement.
