Allegations of the Gandhi scion Varun Gandhi having been 'honey trapped' and blackmailed with pictures of him with foreign escorts and prostitutes, to reveal crucial information on defence matters, have surfaced on Thursday.

The revelations have been sent in as a written complaint to the Prime Minister's office by C Edmonds Allen, a US-based lawyer. According to the letter, Varun Gandhi, in his capacity as a member of the parliamentary defence committee was used by the controversial arms dealer Abhishek Varma and blackmailed to reveal details that were used by arms manufacturers who were looking to score business deals in India.

Speaking to NDTV, Varun Gandhi termed the allegations as being 'ridiculously nonsensical' and demanded proof to substantiate them. He defended himself saying he had not met Abhishek Varma in over 15 years and had not in fact attended the parliamentary committee meetings that were being referred to.

Varun attributed these allegations to certain elements who were trying to prevent him from assuming a role in the forthcoming UP elections. It is no secret that a section of BJP workers are in favour of projecting Varun Gandhi as the party's CM candidate.

Incidentally Edmond Allen was once a business partner with Abhishek Varma before they had a falling out in 2012 with the partners accusing each other of money laundering and cheating. Mr. Allen has since been reportedly supplying the Indian investigations agencies with material to incriminate Varma.

Mr Verma was previously jailed and investigated in several cases including what is known as the 'navy war room leak' which involved selling of sensitive naval secrets by a group that included serving and former military officers.
