Hyderabad: The owner of Unicab taxi operator was arrested on Friday by KPHB police for duping 180 people who gave their cars for lease but never received the promised returns.

According to the police, the accused V. Kiran Kumar opened a car rental business by the name of Unicab at Chaitanyapuri and then he shifted the office to Sai plaza in Hyderguda. The accused then started to lease the cars from their owners and promised to pay Rs20,000 every month. However, he collected Rs1.5 lakh from each car owner to join the scheme.

Those who did not own a car can also join the scheme by paying Rs4 lakh as he would purchase a car in their name and pay the returns every month.

Kiran collected Rs2 crore from 180 people and stopped paying the returns for several months.

"Kiran had been cheating people for the past one-and-a-half years and the victims were not getting any rental money despite the culprit making about 3-4 crore by using their vehicles and also collecting deposits," KPHB inspector Ch. Kushalkar said. After making money Kiran went absconding.

Police registered a cheating case and took Kiran into custody. The accused was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
