The UAE government has alerted all the emarati nationals not to wear national dress in foreign countries after a businessman visiting the US held as an Islamic State (IS) suspect.

Dubai: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has urged emiratis to avoid wearing the ‘Kandura,’ a traditional Arabic dress, while travelling abroad. The UAE has alerted all the emarati nationals about wearing national dress in foreign countries after a businessman visiting the United States was wrestled to the ground and held as an Islamic State (IS) suspect. Emirati men wear the kandura, an ankle-length white shirt covering from neck.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted late Saturday that Emiratis should avoid wearing the Arabic traditional garments for their safety. A separate ministry statement urged women to abide by bans on face veils in parts of Europe.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted late Saturday that Emiratis should avoid wearing the Arabic traditional garments for their safety. A separate ministry statement urged women to abide by bans on face veils in parts of Europe. UAE media reported that an Emirati man, Ahmed al-Menhali, was detained in Avon, Ohio, last week after a female receptionist at the Fairfield Inn hotel hotel. The UAE government has also summoned a senior American diplomat to protest against the ‘abusive treatment’ of Ahmed al-Menhali, in the US for medical check-up.

An emergency 911 call was then made by the woman’s sister and armed officers descended on the hotel, before ordering the man to the ground.

Police were told the worker had overheard him on the phone in the lobby pledging his allegiance to the Islamic State terror group, while being in the possession of ‘several’ disposable phones. Video footage further revealed the incident on how the emirati was treated as Ahmed al-Menhali being arrested and telling the Police officials that “I am a tourist.” The 41-year-old Al-Menhali was pinned to the ground at gunpoint by the Police officers before being told to remove his shoes.
