Two held at RGI airport for trying to smuggle gold

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Thursday arrested two passengers, including a woman, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad for allegedly trying to smuggle gold worth over Rs 2 crore.

The passengers, who arrived from Dubai in the early hours of today, had strapped gold to their legs, DRI's Additional Director S A Usmani said, adding about 8 kilograms of gold jewellery was recovered from them. This was done (by the passengers) to avoid detection by the custom officers and evade payment of custom duty.
The entire quantity of gold, valued at about Rs 2 crore was seized from them, he said. The two were produced before the Special Judge for Economic Offences at Nampally, which sent them to a 14-day judicial custody, he said.
