New York: The US presidential debate between Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and her Republican rival Donald Trump was watched by 84 million people on US TV, breaking a previous record set 36 years ago, a media reported.

The last most watched was the presidential debate between Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan in 1980 which drew 80.6 million viewers.

The viewing figures only counted those who watched the debate on the 13 US TV channels that carried it live, meaning the true figure may be much higher as millions were also thought to have watched it through online live streams, BBC news reported.

Data provider Nielsen said viewers stayed tuned through the 98-minute debate.

This was the 20th US presidential debate and was organised by the Commission on Presidential Debates, a non-governmental organisation.

Hillary Clinton was deemed the winner of Monday night's presidential debate by 62 per cent of voters who tuned in to watch, while just 27 per cent said Republican Donald Trump had a better night, according to CNN/ORC Poll.
