Hyderabad: TRS city president and MLC Mynampally Hanumantha Rao was given a clean-chit within 24 hours after assaulting a local politician D Ramesh and his friend inside Petbasheerabad police station on Sunday.

The MLC and Ramesh encountered each other at a wedding on Sunday at KVR Function hall. The latter had earlier worked for the TRS and was Rao's follower for many years. However, he recently joined Congress. Due to this, Rao held a grudge on Ramesh and had beaten him up at the wedding.

Ramesh’s friend Prasad was also beaten up as he tried to stop the assault. Later, Ramesh approached the Petbasheerabad police, who in turn found that the MLC and his group were already present there. "It took nearly 30 minutes for police to bring the situation under control," said N. Sridhar, a Congress activist. A case under section 147, 149, 290, 323, 506 of IPC was registered against MLC and others. But the accused were later given station bail on Monday.

The police have come under fire for giving the bail without investigating the matter. However, Balanagar DCP Y. Sai Sekhar said that since sections registered were bailable, and punishment was less than seven years in all sections, bail was granted just like in any other case.
