TRS Govt faces flack over GHMC poll delay

Taking a serious view of the Telangana Government’s dillydallying on holding elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the High Court on Thursday reprimanded the government.

“Will you hold the elections or should we hold the elections? If you don’t hold the elections, we shall write to the Central Election Commission,” said the High Court Bench.

The Advocate General wanted time till November to hold the elections to increase the number of GHMC divisions to 200 from the existing 150. The court said it would decide on Monday if six months time was really needed to hold the GHMC elections.

There are speculations that the TRS government was delaying the elections as it does not have much hold on the GHMC, where a significant presence of migrant population from Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. The recent debacle in the MLC elections in Hyderabad and the tough fight it had to endure in Warangal-Nalgonda-Khammam graduate constituency has made the party cagey about another debacle in the GHMC elections.
