Tremors Rock Chittoor, Villagers Flee In Fear

Chittoor: Several villages in the district have been experiencing tremors for over a fortnight and people are living in constant fear despite being assured by the officials that there is no chance of earthquake striking the place.

Mild tremors first struck the villages in a radius of 30km from Chittoor town a fortnight back. Veluturuchenu and CGFS Colony were the most affected in Bangaripalyam mandal. The tremors struck with a big noise from beneath the ground and it continued for nearly 20 seconds, according to villagers. Later the tremors also struck Madireddypally in Yadamarri mandal and this time the quake measured 2.6 on Richter scale. CR Kandriga also experienced tremors which are recurring every now and then in most villages.

The officials visited the villages to build confidence among people but they are not in mood to believe them. More than half the population in villages left their homes and are living in their relatives places elsewhere. Those who stuck to their homes are living in constant fear. Krishnapuram, Perandlapally and Tallamadugu also experienced tremors.

The RDO said there is no chance of any major earthquake in the area.
