Top cop commits suicide hours after being suspended in kidnap case

DSP of Chikkamangaluru in Karnataka committed suicide on Tuesday after he was suspended over a kidnap case.

Bengaluru: Hours after getting suspended over involvement of a kidnapping of a businessman, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kallappa Handibag committed suicide on Tuesday at Muragodu village of Belagavi near Bengaluru.

The top cop, who was arrested after accused of kidnapping a businessman in Bengaluru and was later released on a bail, ended his life by hanging a few hours after his suspension orders were issued.

Police arrested Kallappa, DSP of Chikkamangaluru in Karnataka, after the primary investigation accusing him of involvement in kidnapping a businessman and for taking a ransom of Rs. 10 lakh. He was released on bail on Tuesday. Right after his release, Kallappa received his suspension orders for his involvement in the kidnap which later came to light by the investigation. While tracing out the details of vehicle used for the abduction and the call records of the conversation between the kidnappers discussing ransom, the role of the DSP in the kidnap case was revealed, said the police.

After getting his suspension orders from higher-ups, Kallappa hanged himself at Muragodu village of Belagavi. Then, he was rushed to a nearest hospital where he died during the treatment.
