HYDERABAD: Due to many factors like hunting, quality of habitat and also animal poaching, many birds in India including our national bird, the peacock, are witnessing a drop in their count. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) 'Red List of Threatened Species', the population of green peafowl is drastically coming down.

Statistics show that the population of adult green peafowl in India is currently between 10,000 and 19,999 specimens.

One of our fundamental duties as enshrined into our Constitution states - To protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers, wildlife and to have compassion for living creatures. Living by this, a good Samaritan in his 20s, rescued an injured peacock and rushed it to a veterinarian doctor and later handed it over to the department concerned.

Venu Gopal Reddy, a resident of Bhulkapur village of Rangareddy district, on Monday afternoon, spotted the peacock near the Bhulkapur bus stop which was unable to walk or move. He immediately took it to a vet doctor in the nearby town Shankarpally and treatment of the peacock followed.
