Man Tries To Smuggle Gold Worth Crores, Held At RGIA

Hyderabad: Customs officials seized nearly three kg gold worth Rs 1.12 crore from a passenger at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad.

Based on specific intelligence, the man, who arrived from Sharjah, was caught for allegedly trying to smuggle 26 gold bars totally weighing 2.9 kg, an official press release said.

A case has been registered and further probe is on.

Earlier, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized smuggled gold weighing nearly 2 kgs and valued at Rs 66.27 lakhs from a passenger who arrived at the RGIA in January.

Based on specific intelligence, DRI sleuths intercepted the passenger who arrived by a flight from Indore. During the search, he was found carrying foreign-marked gold bars weighing a total of 1,996.70 grams, worth Rs 66.27 lakhs, which was concealed in his shoes.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the passenger had retrieved the gold from inside the flight, where it was earlier left behind by another passenger who was travelling on an international leg from Sharjah to Thiruvananthapuram, officials said.
