Hyderabad: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Tuesday seized Rs 1.48 crore worth of Saudi Riyals from two people who allegedly tried to smuggle it out of the country.

The two, planned to leave the country for Dubai by two separate flights. They were arrested at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad.

The alleged smugglers were carrying 3.5 lakh Saudi Riyals (Rs 74.37 lakh) each by concealing them in false bottoms created in sweet boxes and biscuit boxes kept in the checked-in luggage.

On interrogation, the two said the currency was obtained from unauthorised dealers and that they were well aware that it was illegal to smuggle foreign currency out of the country.

Probe into the case is underway.

In another incident, unaccounted foreign currency to the tune of over Rs one crore was seized from a passenger at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad on July.

During screening of baggages, the CISF personnel detected currencies of seven countries from the passenger, who was bound for Dubai, adding the total value of the currency was approximately Rs 1.25 crore.

The foreign currency comprised UAE dirhams, Saudi riyals, Kuwaiti Dinars and US dollars.

The passenger along with the currency was handed over to customs officials.
