Hyderabad: The state government is fully prepared to implement the long-awaited weekly-off for the Telangana Police Department. All districts have already received orders from the DG office. According to the duty roster chart, the DG office has directed all district SP and commissioner offices to plan weekly offs based on staff ratio. It is noteworthy that many SPs and Commissioners are inclined to implement the weekly-off from today. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had stated earlier that after reviewing the emergency situations in Telangana, the demand will be fulfilled. The system was implemented in some districts such as Karimnagar. It was later postponed due to inevitable reasons. Even last year, there was a mention of the weekly-off system but with the assembly elections taking place, it was postponed. After the new government was formed, the Home Minister, Mahmood Ali, also reacted positively to the Weekly-off system.

Due to the election code which lasted until May, the implementation of the system was not possible due to the elections in the state. Recently, the AP government also launched a weekly off to the police in the state which once again kicked-off the discussion on the implementation in Telangana. With this, police officers in Nalagonda and Warangal districts started running the weekly off system. Due to the demand of the police department across the state, the Police Officers' Association also met with DGP M Mahender Reddy to decide on the implementation of the weekly-off system.

However, the strength of the police personnel in the state is no longer enough. Due to the shortage of employees, the weekly off system has not been possible. Weekly off may be taken according to police manual 617. However, this was not possible due to a shortage of staff in the department. Overall, the long-standing demands of the police are being met. In fact, according to the current strength, every 400 people in the state should have the police force. But, owing to staff shortages, every 800 people have one policeman. The police department now has 54,000 personnel. With 18,500 soon-to-be recruits joining the ranks, the weekly off system will become easier.

As of now, DGP Mahender Reddy has issued orders to implement the government orders in all districts in phase wise. The system will be implemented in Warangal, Karimnagar and in Nalgonda district as a part of the first phase.
