Hyderabad: With no indications of rains and temperatures continuing to remain high, farmers in Telangana are left high and dry. Although by this time every year farmers prepare ground for sowing in Kharif season, only one lakh acres in the State are sown by farmers as against five lakh acres.

Despite monsoon reaching Kerala coast on June 8, Vayu cyclone played the spoiled sport resulting in no rainfall. Weathermen, however, say monsoon would arrive in Telangana on June 20.

Although 136 mm rainfall is expected by this time every year, there has been hardly any rain in the State. As a result, reservoirs both in Krishna and Godavari basin are completely depleted of any water reserves. The situation of SRSP, Singur and Nizamsagar is also similar. Only Yellampally has some water reserves that could last for a month.

With this depressing scenario, even underground water reserves in the State have also come down to very low levels. According to the Agriculture department, one crore acres are desperately in need of water in the State.
