Hyderabad: With schools in Hyderabad re-opening for a new academic year, the Hyderabad police have launched a special drive to ensure the safety of school children in the city.

The Road Transport Authority (RTA), who has collaborated with the Hyderabad Traffic Police, has initiated a crackdown on vehicles such as buses, vans, and auto-rickshaws which resort to overcrowding of students. A total of 25 traffic and six transport department teams are conducting checks all over the city under this special drive, which will continue for a couple of days.

In the last two days, nearly 521 cases have been registered against owners and drivers of the vehicles for allegedly ferrying more school children than the capacity of the vehicle. According to the police, the 246 cases were registered against auto-rickshaws and vans for carrying more children while the remaining were booked as the vehicle owners did not have proper documents.

Hyderabad Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Anil Kumar informed to the media, as a part of the drive, the parents and school managements are being counseled against sending the children in a vehicle carrying more than the seating capacity. Apart from issuing guidelines to ensure the safety of the children, the teams are also conducting drink and drive checks on the drivers.
