Hyderabad: An Uber driver was allegedly stabbed by a passenger while during a trip at Outer Ring Road near Koheda on Saturday night. However, the cab driver survived and is recuperating at a hospital in the city.

Police said that the driver Y Balaraju was attacked by the passenger with a knife in the rear seat. The booking was done by one named 'Raju'.

According to Balaraju who told Hayathnagar police inspecor K Satish, at 8 pm on Saturday, he received a booking from Koti bus stand to Sanghi temple in Hayathnagar. Two passengers, somewhere in twenties, got into the cab from the Koti stop and opted to pay in cash.

Once they reached Sanghi temple they said they had to meet a friend and were unable to contact him. The duo asked the cab driver to drop them back at the Koti bus stop and Balaraju asked them to change the destination in the app.

They did so and when around 9.30 pm, the cab reached ORR service road near Anjaneya Swamy temple in Koheda, one of them suddenly stabbed Balaraju on head, shoulders and neck from behind.

As soon as he stopped the car, they fled from the scene.

Meanwhile, passers-by saw Balaraju bleeding and rushed him to the nearby hospital. His family later brought him to Yashoda hospital in Malakpet.

The inspector said that he is out of danger.

Police told that according to Balaraju he has not met the accused before and is not able to come to terms why they would attack him.

He added that there was no argument between them as well and neither did the accused try to steal cash or car.

A case has been booked under Section 307 of the IPC and search is underway for 'Raju' under whose name the booking was done.

When Sakshi Post reached Uber for its comments, an Uber spokesperson replied saying the incident is unacceptable.

“What’s been described is unacceptable. Our hearts are with the driver partner and we wish for his speedy recovery. Violence has no place on the Uber app or anywhere else and the rider’s access has been removed. We are assisting the law enforcement with their investigations,” the spokesman said.
