Hyderabad: A 30-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide after she was unable to deal with the harassment of her husband. The incident took place on Monday evening after the woman's husband and his family harassed her for dowry.

According to the police, the woman, identified as Leelasree, had an argument with her husband, Praveen Kumar, who allegedly physically assaulted her.

Following the altercation, the in-laws abused the woman over the phone. Upset over the constant harassment, the woman committed suicide.

Leelasree married Praveen, who hailed from Visakhapatnam in 2013. The couple resided in Guntur for three years before moving to Chitrapuri Colony in Manikonda, Hyderabad. Soon after the marriage, the harassment began as Praveen and his family had taken some loans. Leelasree was pressurized by her in-laws not to reveal these disputes to her parents.

Sources inform that the incident came to light after the woman's daughter responded to a call from her maternal grandmother. After learning of the incident, Leelasree's sister rushed to the house and later filed a complaint with the Raidurgam Police Station in Hyderabad.

The police have arrested the husband and his family members including his sister, brother, and mother on charges of harassment. A case has been registered under Section 498-A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and Section 306 (Abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Further investigation is underway.
