Hyderabad: A prosecution notice has been slapped on Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University(JNTU), Hyderabad, for evading tax returns since its inception.
According to a report in a English daily, JNTU, an autonomous body financially aided by the state government, has a due to the tune of Rs 170 crores for the financial years 2016-18. If the previous year’s liability is to be included, the number would only get higher. Kakatiya University of Warangal is also said to have a sum of up to Rs 15 crores in tax returns as dues for the years 2016-18, Noted a tax review.
Kakatiya University and JNTU were established in 1978 and 2008 respectively. However, the IT assesment showed that JNTU has not paid its IT returns since its inception. The local daily in question reported that the two universities had neither registered under Section 12 AA nor have they established any approval for tax exemption.
