Karimnagar: In a weird incident, a person who is alive and kicking was issued a death certificate. The incident happened at Karimnagar and only reflects the apathy the municipal corporation authorities have over issuing of certificates. The issue came to limelight when the person staged a protest in front of the corporation office on Monday.

Mohammed Jamaluddin Tavakkali works in Ayush department. He was in for a rude shock when he found a death certificate had been issued on his name which mentioned that he had died on January 28, 1977. Born in 1962, Jamaluddin Tavakkali is a visually impaired person. He joined Ayush department in 1991 as an attender.

The incident came to light when Jamaluddin's cousin produced the death certificate in a court case, where a land related dispute was being fought. His cousin, Iliyasuddin had illegal sold the land belonging to the joint family. Iliyasuddin had submitted a death certificate which mentioned Jamaluddin had died at the age of 15 and there were no heirs for the property. After coming to know that the land had been sold, Jamaluddin approached the court and the death certificate came to light.

He questioned the municipal officials as to how could they issue death certificate without any verification and demanded action against the officers who were involved in this. Reacting to the protest of Jamaluddin, Karimnagar municipal corporation commissioner K Sashank promised to take up an enquiry into the issue and even ordered the council secretary to investigate the matter immediately.
