New Delhi: TRS floor leader in Lok Sabha Nama Nageswara Rao demanded the Centre to accord national project status to Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme.

He was speaking as part of the debate during the Motion of Thanks to President's Address in the lower house on Tuesday.

Despite Telangana being the youngest state, he said the State had broken new grounds in terms of irrigation projects under the leadership of its Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao. He said Kaleshwaram, the world's biggest lift irrigation project, was built in three years at a cost of Rs 50,000 crore.

The Khammam MP said that the Telangana government has been seeking the national project status for a long time, and hence it is imperative for the Centre to accede to its demand. He also requested the Centre to fulfill all the commitments made to Telangana in the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014.

Thanking the Centre for granting all necessary permissions to Kaleshwaram project, he said the Union government should take up rivers' linking in a big way to leverage the availability of water in various water bodies in the country.
