The Supreme Court, in a jolt to the Telangana government, today rejected the proposal to provide 67 per cent reservations in the local body polls in the State. Reiterating its earlier judgements, the apex Court ruled that the reservations in all forms of elections should not exceed the limit of 50%.

This comes as a setback to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government, which went for the ongoing Assembly elections today, December 7, that sought the Supreme Court's approval to provide additional reservation in the State, keeping in view the large majority of Backward Classes. However, the request was quashed by the top Court in its latest order today.

It may be recalled that the K Chandrashekhar Rao-led TRS party promised to provide 12 per cent reservation to the SCs, STs and Minorities. The State government sent a resolution passed by the Legislative Assembly to the Centre for consideration.

In one of the election rallies held by KCR last week, he appeared to have been impatient towards a Muslim youth who demanded the 12 per cent reservation. He also lashed out at PM Narendra Modi for what he termed as the Centre's denial of his demand for reservations to Muslims to the extent of 12%.
